Fishing Report

December 29, 2008

Where did the year go? Wow, it's hard to believe 2009 is just around the corner.

With the cold front that has moved in, the fishing has slowed down. They are still picking up some perch and a few walleyes on Cass Lake and Pike Bay. There are roads plowed out, so you can get around. Allen's Bay on Cass Lake is producing some walleye in around l8 feet. Perch and some walleye on Pike Bay in about 20 to 25 feet; and they have also had some luck in that 15 foot range.

They are driving out on Big Wolf. Terry Larson has been busy with several groups fishing for northern and walleye.

We want to wish everyone a Happy New Year and a safe and good time out there fishin!

Well we have about 12 inches of snow and it is cold and windy today, so not much happening for fishing. They are getting some nice perch on Winnie, on the south bay. Ice is averaging 12 inches out there.

Pike Bay and Allen's Bay on Cass have been active too. Sounds like weather will warm up some on Wednesday and Thursday, so we'll have more happening.

Good fishing and stay warm!

Ice on most lakes is running between 8 and 11 inches.

Good fishing.

Fishing Report

December 8, 2008

We are making ice every day. Average on the lakes is 6 to 8 inches right now. With the cold weather we are having, I would say in a week we should have a good amount of ice.

Northerns are going on Steamboat and Andrusia and the north end of Winnie. They are still getting some walleye and perch on Pike Bay

I did get out to do a little spearing with my youngest son, Ben, on Sunday. He did spear one small northern, but the weather was so cold and the ice was doing so much cracking, we didn't see a whole lot. Still, it was great to just get out and spend a little time together.

Hope you will all get a chance to do a little spearing or ice fishing. It's a blast!

Good fishing.

Fishing Report

December 2, 2008

Well, the lakes are making ice. Looks like about 5 to 6 inches on most lakes.

Guys are spearing on the north end of Winnie; they are catching some walleye and perch on Pike Bay and sounds like Big Wolf is producing some northern.

My wife and I spent some time with our friends, Terry and Mary Larson, Saturday evening. Did a little fishing and then Terry cooked us up a meal of boiled northern dipped in butter, with wild rice. Good friends and good food, you can't ask for anything better. Terry owns Northern Adventures and has angling and spear house rentals. He said the ice is better, this time of the year, then he has seen it for many years out on Big Wolf.

Weather man is talking a cold spell coming through starting tonight, so that will add some more ice to the area lakes.

Good fishing and be safe out on that ice.

Well, we had a really good Thanksgiving Day at our house. Hope you all had a happy Thanksgiving too. As always, we had lots to eat and then relaxed and watched some movies in the afternoon.

Guys are gearing up for muzzleloader hunting now. Weather has still been nice, so guys are anxious to get out there.

We have been selling some bait today. We have been told ice is about 6 inches thick on Sucker Bay on Leech and 4 to 5 inches on Big Wolf. I hope to get out on Sunday and check some lakes out for myself. The word right now is "be cautious". I will post more information in a couple of days.

Good hunting and fishing!

Hunting/Fishing Report

November 17, 2008

We registered quite a few more deer again over the weekend. I have had several hunters, who were hunting in the Walker - Hackensack area say they were seeing several wolves.

Me and my family have been busy making venison hot dogs and brats. I was up until midnight last night making hotdogs! I am going to try a batch of pepperoni too. We all like venison. Kids really like the hotdogs and different brats we make.

Someone called on Sunday wondering if we had ice yet. Can't get on the lakes yet, unless you want to use your pontoon boat. Ponds and some of the smaller lakes are forming ice, but the bigger lakes are still wide open. I am hoping after Thanksgiving we will have some ice to report on.

Good hunting everyone. Ice fishing is on the way.

Deer Hunting

November 11, 2008

Froggy is sitting in a swamp this afternoon, looking for that 30-point buck!

As of 2PM today, we have registered over 100 deer. We have seen lots of nice bucks. Froggy and his family did real well over the weekend. Ben got his 8 point buck; Crissy got a 7 point buck and a doe and Mia got 2 does. They were all busy last night cleaning and cutting up their deer. It's good to see the grandkids interested in hunting and fishing.

We have lots of hunters heading for home today. We wish you all a safe trip and hope you had a successful hunting trip and a good time while you were up in the area.

Now we are waiting for the lakes to make ice. With the cold weather we have had the last few days, it's a start.

Opening Deer Hunting

November 9, 2008

We have a light dusting of snow on the ground. Temp in the 20's with some wind. It has been a cold opener, but we have been registering quite a few deer.

Froggy, his wife and three kids and Froggy's dad are all out hunting. They have me minding the store. Ben, Froggy's youngest, got his first deer yesterday, an 8 point buck, going 170lbs. Way to go, Ben! Sounds like the other 2 kids each got deer this morning too. Can't wait to hear all the details this everning.

We have three bucks weighed in for our biggest buck contest. Gabe Haaland leads with his 8 point buck weighing 236lbs; Chad Stangel got a 9 point buck weighing 224lbs; and Mike Bruns registered his buck weighing in at 208lbs. Hunters are having good luck. Deer seem to be moving with this cold weather.

Have a safe hunt. Good luck to all.

Until we get ice on the lakes, I guess it's time to talk hunting. Weather has been warm, but rainy. Sounds like we might see snow flakes Thursday night into Friday. Colder weather should start the deer moving. Traffic heading up North will be busy Thursday and Friday. We are finding scrapes in the woods.

Have a safe hunt. Stop by and let us know if we can help out with anything.

Beautiful, sunny day here in Northern Minnesota. There are still some walleyes being caught. Guys are working deep on Cass and Pike Bay.

Froggy and Mrs. Froggy are out in the woods today, putting up deer stands. All three of his kids will be hunting this year, along with him and Melissa. They couldn't have planned a better day for walking out in the woods, looking at signs and putting up deer stands. Froggy is still busy cleaning rifles and we have been selling quite a few deer licenses. Hope everyone has a safe and successful hunting season.

Fishing Report

October 20, 2008

Well, we have had nice weather the last couple of days; temps in the 40's and the trees are losing most of their leaves now. There are a few duck hunters out and about. Ducks are starting to come down now. I put in my order for a few more blaze orange vests, stocking hats and some gloves. We got most of the hunting stuff out this weekend.

Deer hunting seems to be the major topic now. We will be having our biggest buck and doe contest again this year, for rifle season. Entry fee is $5.00. Biggest buck prizes are: lst place, a Remington Model 715 300 Winchester Magnum; 2nd place, a $50.00 gift certificate and 3rd place a Bear & Sons buck knife. Biggest doe, 1st place is an Optima Pro .50 caliber muzzleloader and 2nd place a $50.00 gift certificate. Hunters must register by the end of the business day, November 7, 2008 and prizes will be awarded November 24, 2008.

There are still a few walleye fishermen out. Some guys are doing well in deep water. If the sun is shining, it's nice to be out on the water. Just remember to bring that extra coat along and like my Gramma Myrt always said, "Put on those snuggies!"

Please stop in and say Hi when your up in our area.

Hope you will be able to get up north this weekend. Maybe you can get in some fishing or hunting and enjoy the great Fall weather.

Froggy's Hunting Trip

October 9, 2008

Mike, from Anchorage, Alaska asked for an update on Froggy's hunting trip and duck hunting in the area. So here goes: Froggy and his buddy Troy each got 3 whitetail deer with their bows. They had one real cold night, when the heater wouldn't work in their tent. Guess they had to snuggle a little. What are buddies for! Froggy said he was glad to get home and sleep in his own bed.

Froggy had a mountain lion walk right under his stand one night. He said that didn't bother him; it was when it got dark and he had to leave the stand, that the hair stood up on his neck and he made a bee-line for the camp!

Elk were bugling in the field where the deer usually come out to feed; so they had to hike further up the mountain to where the deer were being chased. Troy's dad, the "Old Timer" also went along. He had just gotten out of the hospital about a month ago from a serious head injury. Froggy said he made it up to the top of the mountain. Way to go "Old Timer". You've come a long way in just a couple of months.

On the way through the Dakotas they had a successful rifle hunt for antelope. Froggy makes the best wild rice dish with mushrooms and antelope you have ever tasted. It makes my mouth water just thinking about it.

They found a little mexican restaurant along the way and Froggy said it was the best he had tasted since his honeymoon in Mexico.

All in all they had a great trip and their deer and antelope are being processed. Froggy made an l8 hour trip home, non-stop. He says he's not going to do that again. He was really wiped out.

Now to duck hunting. I had heard earlier that the ducks were scarce, but most of the groups that stopped in had fairly good luck. If you found the right spot, the ducks were plentiful.

We had the cystic fibrosis tournament too last weekend out of Break on the Lake. There was one walleye weighing in at a little over 6 lbs and one over 5 lbs. The first place winners came in with a catch just over 17 pounds.

It seemed to be a good weekend for duck hunting and fishing.

Take care, now. Stop in and see us when you can.

Hey, Mike, do you duck hunt around Anchorage? Keep in touch with us.

Fishing Report

October 2, 2008

Froggy is gone this week, bow hunting in Wyoming and on their way back, they will rifle hunt for antelope in the Dakotas. It's his yearly hunt him and his buddy Troy and Troy's Dad have done for the past few years. They always have good hunting and lots of fun. We'll hear lots of hunting stories when they get back!

Fishing on Cass has been good. Mobile seems to be the way to go. Some guys are catching limits around 8 to 10 feet and then again we're hearing around 20 feet. Jig and minnow are what they're using.

Sucker Bay on Leech has been doing well, using fatheads and rainbows. Weather has been great.

We have duck hunters coming up this weekend and I hope they will get a chance to get in a little fishing too. With weather like this, it's just great to get out and enjoy it.

Hope when your up in the area, you will stop in to say Hi.

September 25, 2008

Leech Lake has been doing really well for perch and walleye. Guys out on Cass are finding the walleye up shallower now. 8 to 10 feet seems to be the key. Minnows and crawlers are the favorite bait.

It's a great time to be out fishing and enjoying the great weather.

Good fishing.

Fishing Report

September 18, 2008

Weather has been great this week and the fishing has picked up on the area lakes. Minnows seem to be the key. Fatheads, shiners and of course the redtails, seem to be doing the trick.

With the walleye and northern catch going on and the great weather; what more can be ask for! Working in about 20 feet of water during the day seems to be working and then off the weed lines in the evening.

We were really down on our bear registration this year. With all the berries and nuts still in the woods, they just weren't coming to the baits like they should. Everything is still a couple of weeks behind for us.

Good fishing.

Froggy

P.S. Thanks again Mike for the halibut and the salmon jerky recipe We are sending the jerky recipe on to a couple of our friends and boy, are we ever enjoying that halibut!

Weather has been cooling down and fishing has been picking up the last couple of days on Cass Lake. Guys are fishing the breaks and bars, 15 to 40 feet. Right now the key seems to be being mobile. Minnow seems to be the main bait being used.

Winnie has been doing well and northern have been biting on Big Wolf. We have the best fishing yet to come with fall still ahead of us.

Fishing Report

September 1, 2008

Where has the summer gone to? We had such a late start this spring, it just doesn't seem like it should be September already.

Fishing has been on the slow side on Cass Lake. Winnie and Leech seem to be producing a few more walleyes. Guys have been having some luck with northern and panfish though. Yesterday, we weighed a crappy that went 17 inches and 2 lbs and 7 ounces. That was a real dandy! Sounds like the weather should be cooling off the middle of this week. Best fishing is yet to come!

Hope you all had a safe and happy holiday weekend.

Good fishing!

Froggy

P.S. Thanks to our buddy, Mike, in Anchorage for that salmon jerky! Hope we can get the recipe. That was really good! Thanks, Mike.

Fishing Report

Weather has been warm the last few days and fishing has been slow. The illusive walleye has been hard to come by. I heard a few limits were caught on Winnie today though, working off of Sand Bar.

Cass Lake has been real slow. Guys have been pounding the water to come up with 2 or 3 walleyes. Seems like evening, into the night is when they're getting a few.

There are some pan fish being caught. Big Wolf is also coming up with some northern and crappies.

Well, it's still better then workin! Have a good day out on the lake and enjoy this weather.

Fishing Report

August 7, 2008

The northern pike bite has been strong on Big Wolf Lake and Lake Andrusia. Leeches or crawlers have been working the best. A sucker minnow and a bobber have also produced fish.

Trolling shallow running shad raps is working well for the walleye bite in the early evenings. Anglers have done very well with perch, bass and walleyes on Pike Bay.

Fishing the humps on Lake Winnie has been working well for most anglers.

Leech Lake has had an excellent bite lately. A fathead or leech with a dark green jig has been producing the best bite.

Any day on the lake is better then a day at work!

Good fishing.

Fishing Report

July 27, 2008

It has been a really nice weekend. Fishing has picked up the last couple of days too. We have heard of some muskie and northern action.

Cass Lake is picking up some walleyes in about 15 to 18 feet of water and in the evening, they are using shad raps and rapajas, going in shallower. Winnie also has been doing well. Seems like leeches and crawlers are the bait of choice. With the warmer water, minnows are harder to keep, but there are still golden shiners and some redtails doing the trick.

Some of the smaller lakes have been producing some nice sunfish.

Hope you all are able to get out and enjoy this great weather we have been having this weekend.

See you on the lake!

Fishing Report

July 13, 2008

We have had lots of wind the last couple of days, so that has kept many fishermen on shore. We had a storm go through Wednesday night and several resorts around Cass Lake had trees go down. Temps have been nice - in the 70's; but lots of wind.

Hopefully the weather pattern will settle down in a couple of days and we can get back to fishing. Northern have been going on Big Wolf and Cass Lake and Pike Bay were still producing walleye and perch. Fish seem to be hanging around 14 to 18 feet off the breaks and bars and then shallower in the evening, using some Shad Raps and Rapaja's.

I have been trying to get a new floor put in on my boat and have been canning some homemade jams and jellies. We have some family recipes that we are using. Takes some time, but we enjoy it.

Good fishing!
