Fishing Report

December 26, 2012

Average ice is between 12 and 14 inches now.  There are a few vehicles going out, but to be safe, it might be best to wait a couple days.  It is making ice day and night now.  Weather has been cold, but no wind and sunny days.  It really was a great Christmas weekend and northern Minnesota, with the snow on the trees, lookes picture perfect.

In general, we are hearing that fishing has been pretty good.   Perch and northern have been biting along the weed lines in about 12 feet of water.  They are picking up walleye an hour just before dark.

The Cass Lake Fishing Challenge contest will be February 9th this year.  Hope to see alot of you out there.  There are great prizes and fun for all.

Well, it looks like another year is just about over.  Each year seems to go by faster then the last.  We wish you all a happy and safe New Year's Eve weekend.  Hope you will get a chance to come up our direction.  Don't forget to stop in and see what's hoppin'!

Fishing Report

December 18, 2012

We have a good 5 to 6 inches of snow on the ground now and the trees are just beautiful.  It really looks like a winter wonderland!

Ice on most area lakes is averaging 9 to 11 inches.  Guys are using 4 wheelers to go back and forth from their fish houses.  Froggy is busy with his house rentals, shuttling guys back and forth and cleaning fish for them when they come off the lake in the evening.  Guys are picking up a few northern on Cass and Big Wolf.  Sounds like some of the angling houses are getting some perch and walleye also.

Thanks to everyone who has stopped in at Froggy's and brought us :"goodies" for the Christmas season.  I like to bake, so I try to have a little something at the store to pass out too.

Froggy's oldest son, Jerimiah, will be coming home on leave from Fort Hood, Texas, on Friday and Ben, Froggy's youngest son, will be celebrating his l6th birthday, on Thursday, so we  have lots to celebrate this Christmas season.

We wish you all a Blessed Holiday!  We will be closing at 4PM on Christmas Eve and will be closed on Christmas Day, so we can spend time together with our family.

Merry Christmas to all!

Fishing Report

December 11, 2012

It is making ice and we have a couple of inches of snow on the lakes for insulation.  We were lucky and didn't get dumped on like the southern half of the state.

We are hearing good fishing reports coming from Cass and Winnie.  Guys are starting to go out on Pike Bay now and Andrusia.  We will try to keep you posted, on the latest happenings.

See you out on the ice!

December 7, 2012

Froggy is putting out spear houses today on Allen's Bay on Cass Lake.  Ice is 4 to 5 inches thick on average.  With ice, you can't ever be completely sure!  We had a group going up to Tamarack Lodge on Winnie too today.  Guys are starting to venture out.  Please use caution.

Wind and warm weather yesterday was not good for the ice.  We woke up to cold temps this morning, so that will really help.  We are hoping for cold weather and less wind.  Will keep you updated and let you  know how ice conditions are in the next couple days.

Ice Report

November 27, 2012

Midge Lake and Little Wolf are frozen over.  It is making ice, but remember to be safe.  Froggy went out on Allen's Bay yesterday on Cass and said the ice out there is about an inch thick.  I don't think the big part of the lake is frozen up yet.  I see the north bay, off of Isle of Pines Resort on Big Wolf is frozen over now.  If we continue to have the cold nights, another week will make a big difference.

We are still marking inventory and stocking shelves, trying to get everything ready for safe ice.

Hope you all had a good Thanksgiving weekend.  We had lots of good food and a great time with family.

We woke up to about 3 to 4 inches of snow this morning.  Weather is turning cold and making ice.  Froggy has been busy working on his spear houses and getting everything ready for hard water!

We received our inventory order on Tuesday, so we are busy pricing and stocking shelves with everything .

We had some people buying muzzleloader licenses today.  That opens up tomorrow, for 2 weeks.  Good luck hunters.

Happy Thanksgiving!

November 20, 2012

Wanted to wish you all a happy and safe holiday weekend.  We will be spending Thanksgiving Day at Froggy's house.    He really does up a meal of good food and it is always great to be able to spend time together as family.  We will be missing Jerimiah this year, but he will be coming home for a 10 day leave on December 22nd, so we will be able to spend some time with him for Christmas.

Our big summer inventory order should be arriving either tomorrow or Friday.  Then we will have lots to do to get things marked and put out.

Kalvin Hughs won our big buck contest with his 262 lb buck and Ribs Whitebird, won our doe contest, with his 124 lb doe.  Congratulations!

Deer Hunting

November 7, 2012

There were a few more deer registered today.  Yesterday was quiet.  Rainy and windy and the deer weren't moving.  (Hunters weren't moving either!)

Biggest buck we weighed went 231 pounds.  A dandy buck shot by Jeff Baird of Cass Lake.  We haven't seen many does, but that's on lottery this year.  Bucks are in rut and there is still 11 days to hunt yet.
Froggy and his kids got their deer for this year.   Crissy won the prize with a nice 10 point buck this year.  Way to go girl!   Froggy has a couple more days to finish up a job in Motley and then he should be around for the winter.  He will be getting his fish house rentals ready for the winter season.

Good hunting and stay safe!

Deer Opener

November 3, 2012

I thought we might have a coating of snow when we got up this morning, but no such thing.  Opening deer hunting seemed to go well.  We have heard lots of deer being seen and  hunters have had a pretty productive day.

We even had a couple guys in for bait.  Seems like walleye are biting on Cass in about 8 to 10 feet, along the weed lines.  The guys were using rainbows.

So all in all, it was a pretty good day.  Weather was great, hunting and fishing were good.  What more can you ask for!

Stay safe!  Good hunting and fishing.

Deer opener is almost here.  We hope you all  have a safe and successful weekend.  It sounds like the weather will be in the 40's, with a chance of snow flurries on Saturday.  That doesn't sound all bad.  It seems like the deer are around, but come Saturday, they seem to get a little smarter.

We woke up to 4 inches of snow this morning.  I don't know that it will last.  They are talking temps in the 40's this week.  It would be nice for tracking for the deer opener though.

Not too much bait going out the door at Froggy's right now.  There are still some people going out and they are picking up some fish.  Most everyone is doing their fall chores and getting ready for the big deer hunting season coming up.

Froggy is finishing up a  job in Fargo this week and should be done burying cable in the next couple of weeks, depending on the weather.  Then he will be busy getting things ready for his fish house rentals.

We have been working on our inventory at the store.  We got a shipment of our winter inventory yesterday, so we are getting that out on the shelves.

It has been a slow week, fishing wise.  We did have a few groups going out today.  Jig and a minnow is still the way to go.

Everyone is thinking about fire arm season already.  Weather is suppose to be better next week.  That should help fishing too.

This time of year you can enjoy both hunting and fishing.  Hope you get a chance to get out and enjoy the out of doors.

Fishing Report

October 2, 2012

Fishing has only improved with each day this week.  Walleye and perch are biting on Cass Lake, Winnie and Leech Lake.  Jig and a minnow is the way to go.  Shad raps and rapajas just before and after dark.

The cystic fibrosis tournament will be this Saturday, out of Break on the Lake Resort.    The dinner, auction and rules meeting is at the Cadillac Bar and Grill, Friday night.  Happy hour starts at 6PM, dinner and auction to follow.  Hope you will be able to join in for this great cause.

We are starting inventory at the store now, before we get our big summer and winter order due to arrive late Noverber.   We work at it a little bit each day.

Hope you are enjoying this great weather and the beautiful fall colors.  It sounds like Thursday, things will change and cool weather will be settling in.

September 25, 2012

Weather has been really great and sounds like it will continue for most of this week into the weekend.  Walleye and jumbo perch have been biting out on Cass.  We are hearing about 18 feet for the walleye, using a jig and minnow.

We have also heard that fishing has been good out on Steamboat Lake.

Fall in northern Minnesota is really awesome.  Hope you will get a chance to come up for a weekend and enjoy.

Froggy is out in Wyoming this week, bow hunting.  Hope he gets his deer.  He should be back on Sunday.

Fishing Report

September 19, 2012

Lot of fishermen having luck with perch and walleye too. For the MWC walleye tournament last weekend, there was a lot of crawlers used and the rainbows did a real good job. First place went to the same team who won last year. We had quite a few local teams who placed also. The big walleye were found in that 20 to 28 foot of water. Pike Bay did real well producing big fish. Everyone had a good time and the weather was in their favor.

Fall is in the air. Hope you will get a chance to get out and do some more fishing yet. Water temps are right around that 63 and 64 degrees.

I believe they are doing pretty good out there, but like any good fishermen, they don't tell us everything.

Good luck to all the guys this weekend.

Fishing Report

August 21, 2012

Weather has been great! Fishing continues to be productive out on Cass Lake. Crawlers are still the best bait to use. Pribly's were in the store today to pick up their 2nd flat of crawlers for the week. As usual, they are having good luck out there on Cass. They have fished the area enough to know where the good spots are and then they seem to have some of that thing called "luck" too.

There have been several groups in this week for heavy northern suckers. Fishing northern out on Winnie is going well too.

Hope you will get a chance to get out in this northern country and enjoy this great weather and even get to wet a line or two.

See you out on the water.

Fishing Report

August 18, 2012

Raven's Point out on Winnie, did well for a group of fishermen today. Cass is still producing walleye using crawlers, but it seems fish have moved out deeper. 18 to 24 feet seems to be the depth that is working the best right now. Still shad raps and rapajas in the evening off the weed lines. Water temp is 74 degrees today out on Cass Lake.

Our computer bit the dust at the store, so if you want to get ahold of us, best way is by the old fashion telephone for now.

Froggy was at the store this morning. Sure was nice to have him around.

Our friends from Monticello, the Pribyl family, are up for the next week, so we will get the low down on how fishing is going on Cass. They always do well. Sure was nice to see them again. Don't seem like a year has gone by already.

Fishing Report

August 10, 2012

Weather has cooled down some and fishing has been doing well. Crawlers and leeches are still the bait of choice. Fishing is still the best in that 10 to 12 feet of water and shallower in the evening, with the shad raps and rapajas. We are hearing oxygen levels in the deeper waters, are low and that seems to explain the fish hanging in the shallower parts of the lakes.

Hope you get a chance to get out and do some fishing and enjoy this nice weather. With the fall still to come, we have some of the best fishing still on the way.

Fishing Report

July 10, 2012

Fishing has been slow. Some are getting walleye around 20 to 25 feet, but they are working for them. Still doing the shad raps and rapajas in the evening. That seems to be the best bet. Crawlers and leeches are the main bait.

Clean up after the storm one week ago, is still continuing. Most of the roads are open and power is back on. A couple of the resorts have some work to do on cabins. Norway Beach campground is closed and I don't know when it might open again. That area really got hit hard. It's really amazing that with all the trees that went down, no one was seriously hurt that we have heard about.

Fishing Report

July 4, 2012

Happy 4th of July! We have spent the last couple of days cleaning up after our big storm that went through on Monday evening. Power was out for about a day, so we lost most of our minnows. We had about 8 trees blow down around our house too. With the help of family, friends and neighbors, we are pretty much back to normal, if there is such a thing!

With the warm weather, walleye have slowed down, but payfish and bass are biting. Best bet for the walleye is still shadraps and rapajas, in the evening or spinner rigs and crawlers on Cass. Water temps are right around 80 degrees.

Our DNR printer got fried during the storm, so we are waiting for a replacement, which we should have sometime Friday, so we can print out licenses. Our phone and coffee pot, along that south wall, also no longer work. There are still some residents of Cass Lake and several resorts in the area that are without power. Lots of trees went down, but thankfully, no one was injured.

Hope you all had a good 4th of July.

Last week fishing was up and down, along with the rains. We are suppose to have a nice stretch of weather this coming week and that means fishing should only improve. They shouldn't be quite so scattered. There are still some minnows going out, but more crawlers and leeches. Continue to work the breaks and bars and in the evenings, shadraps and rapajas in that 6 to 8 foot of water, along the weedlines.

Hope you all had a good weekend. The big 4th of July holiday is just around the corner. Stop by and check us out when your in the area.

Fishing Report

June 19, 2012

Walleye are not as aggresive. Seems they are feeding on mayflies. Water temps are in the 68 to 70 degree range. Shiners are getting hard to trap with the warmer waters and leeches and crawlers seem to be the ticket. Bass have been biting and muskies seem to be active too. Throwing shad raps and rapajas in the evening are working pretty good for the walleye.

We had a great trip to Fort Benning, Georgia. Good weather, no problems with the car and a good flight back to Minnesota for Mia and Gramma Froggy. The graduation ceremony was awesome, really something to see. We are so very proud of Jerimiah! His next duty is at Fort Hood, Texas. Fishing has been good again this week. Cass Lake is still doing well with a jig and a shiner. We do see more crawlers and leeches leaving the store though. The tournament on Leech last weekend went well and fish were caught using redtails, leeches and also crawlers. Fishing was generally good.

Me and my wife and mom will be heading for Fort Benning, Georgia for my oldest son's graduation from basic training. He is graduating as cav scout. We are so very proud of Jerimiah! Mia and grandma will be flying back to Minnesota on Friday the 15th. Mia has a 10 day leave before he has to report to his next duty station. May 28, 2012

Hope you all had a good holiday weekend. We were busy at the store, shiners were really going out the door. Cass Lake has really turned on. Jig and a shiner is the key. 9 to 12 feet of water, off the breaks and bars. During the day, they are finding them around 15 to 20 feet. Being mobile seems to be the way to go.

We have heard that Leech was also doing good over the weekend. I know some guys are having luck with leeches, but the majority of the bites over the weekend seemed to be with a jig and a shiner.

I haven't heard whats happening out on Winnie the last couple of days, but I know there are alot of leeches going out that way. Last I heard, Raven's Bar was the place to go.

The big opening weekend has come and gone with much success! What a weekend weather wise. I don't remember such a warm and sunny opener weekend.

Bait of choice, as usual for the opener, was a shiner minnow and a jig, or spinner rig. We heard good results from Cass and Winnie. Most fish were in the 9 to 14 feet range. I think most of the fishermen were just glad to be out on such a nice, warm, weekend and catching walleye was a bonus.

I would think that by the end of next week, there wouldn't be much ice, if any, left on the area lakes. We will keep you in touch. Let's get those boats out!

We are anxious for open water and got out some of our summer inventory this afternoon.

Stop by when your in the area.

Fishing Report

March 19, 2012

Most guys are walking out when they can get out. Landings are pretty bad and it is suppose to rain tonight. Maybe it's time we start thinking about getting the boat out. All in all we have had a pretty good winter and we are getting anxious to see spring come.

It's time for us to start thinking about changing over from winter to our spring inventory.

Stop in when your in the area.

Fishing Report

March 16, 2012

Landings are getting tough to get out on. Seems like everyone is using 4 wheelers. Good news is that the perch and pan fish are biting. Maybe we will have an early ice out and can just get right to getting out the boats.

Good fishing!

Fishing Report

March 12, 2012

Fishing was good this weekend. Warm weather and sunshine helped. With the rain we got last night and the warm weather coming for the rest of the week, we will have to watch the lake landings. One guy was in this afternoon and said he thought the west landing on Leech, just off highway 371, would be questionable in a couple days.

We will try to find out how the area landings are doing and keep you posted.

Good fishing!

Fishing Report

March 5, 2012

Perch fishing seems to have slowed down some. Right now only the smaller ones seem to be biting. Tomorrow is suppose to be sunny, warm and little wind. We are hoping that will bring on the perch bite. If you can't catch them one day, wait for the weather to change and try again. It's always better then working!

See you out on the ice.

Good fishing!

Snow

February 26, 2012

We got a good 8 inches of snow today and there is still a little snow coming down. It sounds like it is suppose to snow off and on this week. We really didn't want this snow any more now. We were hoping to just go right into Spring. I have been busy plowing most of the day.

Now that spearing is closed for the season, I will be pulling my houses of the lake. Then there is the end of the season work to be done on them. Between that and plowing, it looks like a busy week ahead.

Ice is great and I hope you will have a chance to get out and still do some panfish and perch fishing.

See you out on the ice.

Fishing Report

February 23, 2012

Perch are biting and everyone is trying to get out as much as possible to enjoy the last few days of walleye and northern fishing for this season. We talked to Laura at Tamarack Lodge today at the Walker distributor show and she said fishing has been doing real well and they are working that 8 to 10 feet of water and getting some nice perch .

Get out and enjoy these last few days of walleye and northern fishing. We are hoping March will be good for some perch and panfish too.

See you out on the ice.

Good fishing!

Fishing Report

February 20, 2012

Not too much new to report. Weather is changing and we are suppose to get from 2 to 6 inches of heavy snow tonight. After we made it this far without snow this winter, I was hoping that maybe it would miss us all together. Oh well, that's Minnesooooota!

My oldest son, Jerimiah, left for the army on Tuesday, February 14th. He is stationed at Fort Benning, Georgia. He got to call Saturday and he is still in processing. He thought by Thursday, he would officially be starting basic training. We sure do miss him, but are so very proud of him too.

Perch fishing is still going on. Walleye are still kind of hit and miss. This is the last week for walleye and northern. Winter really has gone by fast and the nice winter weather has helped that.

Looks like I will have to get the plow out and move some snow in the morning.

See you on the ice.

Good fishing!

Fishing Report

Februatry 15, 2012

There were over 400 people who participated in the Cass Lake Chamber fishing contest on Saturday. It was cold and windy, but everyone seemed to have a good time. We had guys from as far away as Michigan and South Carolina fishing in the contest. Three of the top money prizes were won by young kids this year. First prize went to Cole McHigney from Brainerd, with a 2 lb., 13.8 ounce northern. Congratulations to all the winners.

Fishing in the area seems to be good one day and not so good the next. Yesterday we heard that the walleye bite had picked up on Pike Bay. Hopefully thats a sign of things to come for the weekend. Temps are pretty steady in the 20's, but we did get a coating of snow this afternoon. With President's weekend coming up, hope you will get a chance to get out and get a little fishing in.

See you out on the ice.

All the prizes will be given out at the Palace Casino, after the contest and they are also furnishing a hot lunch. Portables are allowed and you will be shuttled out to the contest area.

Fishing in the area has been good. Lots of perch and the occasional walleye. Only a couple weeks left for the walleye and northern season. Hope you can get out and get some fishing done.

Fishing Report

February 3, 2012

Lots of minnows going out the door today. Perch bite has definitely picked up. Pike Bay, Cass and Winnie are doing well in about that 8 and 9 feet of water. They are picking up some walleye too. Fatheads and crappie minnows seem to be the ticket. Some silver shiners are also going out the door. Another great day weather wise.

See you out on the ice.

Man what great weather we are having. Fishing seems to have picked up some today. We are selling a lot of crappy minnows, so I would say those favorite crappy holes are producing some fish. Hope you can get a chance to get out and enjoy this northern Minnesota winter.

Don't forget the Cass Lake fishing contest coming up on February 11th. Tickets are $35 if you buy them before the contest starts. They have great prizes and lots of fun for all.

See you out on the ice.

Fishing Report

January 24, 2012

Everyone is driving out on the lakes now. We got about 3 inches of snow on Sunday, so we have an average of about 4 to 5 inches total.

Guys were having some luck with perch today out on Cass Lake in about 8 feet of water. Jim from Ojibway Resort on Pike Bay has been picking up a few walleye in the morning and evening in about 14 feet of water.

We are suppose to have a couple nice days coming up and that should help the perch and walleye bite.

Hope you will get a chance to get out on the ice and enjoy this great weather we are having, and maybe catch a fish or two in the process.

Good fishing!

Fishing Report

January 17, 2012

Well, our cold spell is here and it is making ice now! Fishing slowed down some yesterday, but we are hoping for a better couple days today and tomorrow. Sun is shining and it is a great day! Froggy was out on the ice early this morning and is fixing breakfast for a group of his guys. That kid can really cook, even if I do say so myself.

Perch are still in that 8 foot range and walleye are around 14 feet. We haven't heard much about the panfish the last few days. Hope you can get a chance to get out and enjoy this great Minnesota winter and do some fishing.

Don't forget the Cass Lake Chamber fishing contest coming up on February 11th. We will be selling tickets at Froggy's. It is always a good time and some great prizes. Hope to see you then.

Have a good day.

Guess we have winter now. What a change. A couple days ago it was in the 30 and 40 degree range. Today I think the high was 10 degrees. Well, one good thing, it sure is making ice now!

Fishing has slowed down the last couple of days with the change in weather. We are hoping by this weekend, things should be picking up again.

Most are driving out on the lakes now, but ice is never 100 percent sure, so use caution and stay away from the pressure ridges.

See you out on the ice.

Fishing Report

January 5, 2011

Fishing continues to be pretty good. They are driving out on Cass and Pike Bay. There is a pressure ridge on the West landing on Pike Bay, so everyone is using the East and South landing. There are some panfish and crappie fishermen heading out on some of the area smaller lakes too. We also have guys heading up to Lake of the Woods and Red Lake.

Ice seems to be good, as good as ice can be. Weather has been great. Hope you can get a chance to get out and enjoy this winter.

If your in the area, stop in and check out out decoys.

See you out on the ice
