Fishing Report

December 31, 2013

Well, another year gone.  Boy time sure does fly.  We are in the middle of a real cold snap.  I can't remember so many below zero days for a December, in a long time.  Good thing, it is making ice!  Portables are still going out with snowmobiles and 4 wheelers.  Froggy has been going on a packed road with his Jeep.  Ice there is about 15 inches.  We will let you know if anyone starts going out by this weekend.

Fishing seems to have slowed down some with the cold weather.  Froggy has a group coming up this weekend.  We will let you know how they do.

HAPPY NEW YEAR to you all!

Good fishing!

Fishing Report

December 28, 2013

Still a challenge, getting out on the lake.  We are hearing of more guys getting out though, with snowmobiles and their portables.  Good thing is that they are all reporting GOOD FISHING!  After all the work getting out to some of their spots, I am glad to hear that it is paying off.

We had guys reporting Steamboat was doing well and Cass Lake just before dark in 15 feet of water, was producing some nice limits of walleye.

We are hoping that with the couple days of warm temps and now a "Good Old Minesota Cold Spell" coming in for the next several days, that it will help the slush and snow conditions on area lakes.  We will do our best to keep you informed.

Good fishing!

Fishing Report

December 23, 2013

We got an ice report and fishing report from Froggy today, so here goes:

"There is about 12 inches of ice on average, with some slushy spots.  Snowmobile is still the way to travel.  Spearing has been good.  I have out 15 rental houses."

Be cautious and stay safe!  We are wishing you all a Merry Christmas!

Fishing Report

December 20, 2013

Guys are starting to take houses out and bait has been going out of the store.  Still using snowmobiles though.  Making a trail and using it after it freezes.  Continus checking ice depth and slushy spots.

We will keep you updated.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, BEN!

Fishing Report

Not too much new to report today.  Going is still tough out on the area lakes.  Snowmobiles are the way to go for now.  A few more guys are starting to venture out, so maybe we will have more to report in a few days.

Froggy's will be closing at noon on Christmas Eve Day and we will be closed Christmas Day.  It is always a special day to spend with family.  Our oldest grandson, Jerimiah, will be missed.  He is deployed  in Egypt.  Merry Christmas to all.  Have a blessed and safe holiday.

Fishing Report

December 13, 2013

For those fishermen who are venturing out on the ice, they are saying that the fishing has been good.  No one is driving out because of all the snow, water in some spots and average ice is around that 8 inches.  Guys are making paths with snowmobiles or 4 wheelers, letting them freeze and then going from there.  With all the snow, ice conditons aren't the best, so you have to be careful where you go and make sure you check out the ice depth.

Be safe!  See you out on the ice.

Fishing Report

December 7, 2013

Froggy posted a nice picture of fish caught today on facebook page.  He said it is hard going because of the snow, but the fishing is good!  We are hearing an average of 8 inches of ice and some spots where there if water.  I would hope with this cold weather we are having that it would help that problem.  But then again, we did get a lot of snow.  We will keep you informed.

See you out on the lake!

Good fishing!

Snow Report

De cembe 5, 2013

Our total snow is between 18 and 20 inches.  Everyone has been plowing and shoveling to beat the band.  This is where the true acts of kindness really shine!  Froggy's plow truck is down and getting repaired and we have to thank neighbors and friends for pitching in and helping out where needed!  Mother Nature can be tough, but the goodness in people's heart's always shines through.  I do have to say, with the sun shining today, it really is a beautiful winter wonderland.  Now comes the cold and that will surely help with the ice conditions.

Al from Sunset Cove was in yesterday and said that his boys are catching some fish and so far, he has no water up in the house.  Then again, I have heard of some guys who are having a water problem and have to lift up the houses.  One day at a time.

Will try to keep you up on snow and ice condtions, as soon as we hear anything.

Good fishing!

Snow Report

December 3, 2013

Plows and shovels were at work today.  We must have about 9 inches of new snow and they say we have more coming tonight.  This isn't helping the ice on the lakes at all.  Weather is suppose to get real cold starting tomorrow night.  That will make more ice, but we still have to deal with the snow on top of it all.  Oh well, we're Minnesotan's, we're tough!  Mother Nature has her own plan for us to deal with.

Keep safe.

PS  Happy Birthday to Froggy's wife,  Melissa, who turns 34 today!

Fishing Reeport

December 2, 2013

We had a couple guys in yesterday, who were getting some perch out on Pike Bay.  They were going out the south end.  Everyone is starting to get out on the lakes.  Ice is ice, so please be careful!

We woke up to around 3 inches of new snow this morning and sounds like we have more to come.  Froggy is getting his plow truck ready to go and taking care of his fish houses.  The Old Toad and I will be doing some clean up today at the store.  Grandson, Ben, will be around to give us a hand after classes today.  Thanks a bunch, Ben!  I guess winter is here to stay.

See you out on the lake!

Fishing Report

November 29, 2013

Bait is starting to go out the door.  Smaller lakes have 6 to 7 inches of ice.  You still need to be cautious.  We are hearing around that 3 to 4 inches on some of the area larger lakes.    We will keep you informed as we hear any news.

Stay safe!  Good fishing!

Fishing Report

November 27, 2013

We got our heavy northern and decoy minnows in yesterday.  It is making ice!  The little lakes and ponds are frozen and the bays are freezing out on the big lakes.  If the temps continue and the winds aren't too strong, a week will make a big difference for the bigger lakes.

We wish you and your family a blessed Thanksgiving Day.  Froggy's Sports will be closed tomorrow and open again Friday.  This year, the Old Toad and I will be having Thanksgiving dinner at our house.  I plan on cooking most of the day tomorrow.  Turkey and all the trimmings and of course, pie!  Froggy and Mrs. Froggy are invited to friends in Brainerd.  Jerimiah is in Egypt, Crissy will be working and Ben will be at his mom's; and of course our daughter, Melissa and her guy, Captain Ed, will be spending their Thanksgiving in Anchorage, Alaska.   Those of us who can, will get together for turkey leftovers and pie when their schedules permit.  We just love holiday leftovers!
Happy Thanksgiving to you all!

Fishing Report

November 21, 2013

We have our winter inventory out now and just have to get a few spears in the store yet.  We got our decoys in this week from Duey's Decoys and Lake Superior Decoys.  Froggy even got a few ice saws from Finland.  He is anxious to try one out and has been busy getting his rental houses ready to go.

I had a couple guys in this afternoon getting minnows to head up to Red Lake this weekend.  I suggested that they make sure and wear their life jackets.  It is better to be safe then sorry.  Midge Lake has been frozen over for a couple of days now.  With the cold weather coming this weekend, the bays should start to ice over on the bigger lakes, provided that the wind doesn't blow 20 miles an hour.  Everyone is getting anxious.

It's time for me to get out my old "snuggies".  It takes a while to get used to the cold weather.  The Old Toad laughes at me, but on really cold nights, I even put on my stocking hat, when I go to bed.  It really does help keep you warm.

We are looking forward to seeing the fishermen and the ice houses coming back up in the area.  Stay safe and stay warm!

Stop by when your in the area.

Good fishing!

Hunting Report

November 14, 2013

Froggy got in some ammo yesterday.  We now have 270, 223 and 6.5 shells.

Deer hunting has been slow so far this season.   Not  as many coming in for registration and we are hearing that there just isn't that many deer being seen.  It is suppose to be a nice weekend, weather wise, and then get cold again on Monday.  Hopefully the deer will be moving

Some of the smaller ponds are starting to ice over and I see that the bay on the north end of Big Wolf had ice on it this monring.  With a couple of nice days coming up, I don't know if the ice will stay.  It is suppose to get cold again on Monday and it does get below freezing each night.  It's coming!!

Have a good weekend and good hunting!

Deer Hunting Opener

November 8, 2013

Well another year has gone bye and it's deer opener tomorrow!  Just want to say we wish all you hunters safe travel and a safe and successful hunt!  If your in the area, stop by and say Hi.  We have been selling quite a bit of ammunition this week.  Still can't seem to get 270 rifle shells or 22 shells yet.  We will keep on trying.  Most of the distributors are saying that ammo is gone before it even gets into their warehouses.  This is really crazy.

We are still working on our inventory orders for this winter and next summer.  We get a few boxes taken care of each day.  Thanks to Auntie Mitz and the Old Toad for all their help.  It will come, a little at a time.

Sounds like we might even get a little snow for this weekend, which will be great for tracking deer.  Froggy, Mrs. Froggy, Crissy and Ben are heading out to the hunting land this afternoon and will be camping out for the weekend.  Have a safe hunt family!  The Old Toad and I like that venison sausage that Froggy has made, so we are hoping for a successful hunt too!

Good luck and safe hunting to all you hunters!

Fishing Report

November 2, 2013

Gosh what a beautiful day!  We actually had a few guys in for minnows  Hope you were able to get out and enjoy this one.  Don't think we will be getting too many more of these kind of days, but then who knows.  We just can't out guess Mother Nature!

We have been busy with our winter and summer inventory orders.  We received our big orders this week and now we are marking and finding room to display everything.

We are starting to sell quite alot of deer licenses.  It's hard to think about deer hunting on a day like today, but it is just around the corner.  Froggy went out to his hunting spot today to work on some stands.

Hope you got a chance to get the boat in the water for one more time.  It was just a perfect day.

See you out on the water.

Fishing Report

October 24, 2013

We had a few guys in the last couple of days and they are saying that the fish are scattered.  Some walleye are in 8 to 10 feet of water and then again they are catching some in that 25 to 20 foot range.  Nothing about this whole summer has been "normal".

Hope you can still get a chance to get out, while temps are still not that bad.  Froggy will be home this weekend and will be starting on his spear houses.  Don't know where the summer has gone.

See you out on the water.

Fishing Report

October 21, 2013

Things are pretty quiet at Froggy's.  There was a cool wind blowing today and snowfakes were in the air.  We got enough snow to cover the ground, but by the middle of the afternoon, most of it was gone.

Froggy is finishing up his cable work and is planning to get some of the spear houses out next weekend and start going over them.  I guess winter is coming to the "North Country"

We took time to get away for a couple of days over the weekend and went to Ely to do some grouse hunting.  Crissy got her first 2 Ely grouse!  Now both Ben and Crissy have gotten grouse in the Ely area.  A good time was had by all.    We even took Froggy and Melissa's dog, Sofi, along.  She is such a good dog and really minds well.

Thanks to Auntie Mitz, Dick H and Doug J for all the help, so Froggy and the family could take a couple of days to relax.  The only one that wasn't there, was Jerimiah, who is in the Army and is currently stationed in Eqypt.  We really miss him and are very proud of him.

I guess it won't be long and everyone will be thinking deer hunting!  Hope you all had a great weekend.  Even with the cool weather, with the snow flakes coming down today, this north country is really beautiful!

Fishing Report

October 15, 2013

Not a whole lot of fishermen up in the area right now, but fishing continues to be good for the brave at heart!  We have had cool, wet weather the last couple of days and the leaves are really falling off the trees.

Jig and a minnow is the way to go.  Walleye are shallow, we are hearing about that 6 to 8 foot range and crappie are biting in about 15 to 20 feet.

Hope you will get a chance to enjoy each good weather day we have, season is changing fast and it won't be long and everyone will be hitting the woods for deer hunting.

Froggy is finishing up his cable work in the cities and should be around here more in a couple of weeks, depending on the weather.

See you out on the water.

Fishing is picking up.  Walleye are coming in shallower now.  Jig and minnow is the way to go.  Leech has been really going.  Dick H. that helps us at the store, has been having good luck on the north end of Cass for walleye.  Weather has been great too.  Hope you are able to get out and enjoy theses last days of fall.

Fishing Report

October 4, 2012

We are hearing good reports today.  Walleye are biting in that 12 to 16 foot range, using a jig and a minnow.  Sounds like you want to be mobil though.  Pick up 2 or 3 here and then move to the next spot.  There are some nice size perch and also northern being taken too.  Lower water temps have made the fish active and hungry.

We have crappie, fats, rainbows, river mix, creek chubs and lt and hvy northern minnows in the shop.  We also have crawlers and wax worms.

Tomorrow will be the Cystic Fibrosis Tournament, out of Break on the Lake Resort.  Good luck to all the fishermen.  This is a fun time and for a great cause.

We made our big summer and winter inventory order this week, so now we will have to get busy and inventory what we have left on the shelves, before the new inventory arrives.  It is a crappy job, but we all work together, so that makes it easier.

Hope you all have a good weekend.  Stop in and say Hi when your in the area.

Fishing Report

September 26, 2013

Water temps are still around that 63 degree or so.  Walleye are biting, but will pick up as the temp gets to the middle 50 degree range.  Perch are biting in that 8 to 10 foot range.  Seem to be a lot of perch fishermen out and about.  Weather has been great, so it is nice to enjoy it while we can.  Getting some fish, just makes it better.

Just letting you know the "Old Toad" has been in the hospital and was discharged this afternoon.  He has a blood clot in his right lung and so, getting that dissolved is the top priority.  He is in good spirits and just as honry as ever.  He is anxious to get back to the store.  He is suppose to have limited activity, so we are going to try to get him to go home every afternoon.  Moving around is good for him, but just going at it slow for now.  Thank you for all the calls and good wishes.  He appreciates you all.

Our daughter, Melissa, extended her visit and has been here with us at the hospital and helping out with everything.   Thank you to all our family and friends.  Froggy, Melissa, Ben, Crissy, Melissa M., Auntie Mitz, Dick H., Doug J.  Thanks again to everyone.  Special thanks to our daughter's Alaska boss, for letting her stick around to help us out and a special thanks to Alaska's Captain Ed!  It was a pleasure having him here.

Hope you will get a chance to get out and enjoy some of this beautiful fall weather.

See you out on the water.

Fishing Report

September 13, 2013

First day of the MWC tournament.  Weather was beautiful and we heard that the local guys all came in with their 5 walleye.  Redtails are worth their weight in gold!  Tomorrow is the last day.  Hope we can get out to the weigh in around 4:30 and see where everyone stands.

Perch are biting in 8 to 10 feet of water.  Walleye are doing okay, but we still are waiting for that water cool down.  Water temp is still around 69 degrees.  Northern are biting.  Muskie have been slow too.

We are waiting for our daughter from Anchorage to arrive this evening.  Am hoping to spend as much time with her as we can.  It has been 7 years since she has been home.  When I talked to her about 4:30, she was in the Minneapolis airport, waiting for their plane to Fargo.

Hope you are all getting a chance to enjoy this great weather.  Won't be long and the leaves will be changing colors.  Life is great!

Froggy is in the bear stand tonight.  Hope he sees something.  Small game opens up too tomorrow.  Hunting will be difficult with all the leaves still on the trees.  Have a good weekend.

See you out on the water.

Fishing Report

September 9, 2013

Water temps are still in the mid 70's.  Fish are being caught, but it is not going "gang busters".  They are still in that 15 to 18 foot range.

An 8 year old young man, caught a beautiful 27 inch walleye on Saturday, fishing from shore at Knutson Dam!  Now that's what fishing is all about.  Congratulations!  I am hoping that his dad will email us a picture of the fish.  Spinner rigs are still going and shad raps and rapajas in the evening.

Welcome to the pro-fishermen in the area.  The MWC tournament will be this weekend, hosted out of Stony Point Resort.  Good luck to all you fishermen.  It is hard to keep redtails in the store.  We get some, but they are going out as soon as we get them in.  We are hoping to get some more in the next day or two.  We also have some really nice creek chubs.

We are anxiously waiting for our daughter and Captain Ed to come for their visit.  It has been 7 years since we have seen Melissa, so it is about time!  They will be here this weekend.

Froggy and Crissy have been out in the bear stands, but no luck as of yet.  Froggy is back down in the cities working this week and Crissy has school at BSU, but I imagine they will give it another try this coming weekend.

It sounds like the weather will be cooling off by the end of the week.  A good couple weeks of cool weather and the fishing will really pick up.  Our good fall fishing is yet to come.

Thanks to all of you who stop in to say "Hi" and let us know how your doing out on the water.

Fishing Report

September 3, 2013

Hope you all had a great Labor Day weekend!  Weather has been just great up in northern Minnesota.  Sounds like temps will be around mid 70's and lower 80's the next few days.  Water temps are around that 76 degree range.

We had guys and gals stop by the store yesterday to let us know they were getting walleye on Pike Bay in 15 feet of water, using crawlers and pink spinner baits.   Shad raps and rapajas are working in the evening, along the weed lines.  Cass Lake has been producing walleye shallower, in that 8 to 12 foot range.

Hope you can get out and enjoy this great weather.  Let's hope for a long fall!

See you out on the water.

Fishing Report

August 30, 2013

Warm weather has slowed down the fishing and the fishermen.  It is suppose to cool off this weekend and hopefully that will trigger the fish to bite too.  We did get some needed rain yesterday.

We have the big Labor Day weekend coming up.  Hopefully you will be able to get your family together and enjoy the outdoors.  We are looking forward to having you stop by before you head out to the resort or your cabins.

FYI, the Cystic Fibrosis tournament is coming up, out of Break on the Lake Resort, the first weekend in October and the MWC tournament will be September 13th and 14th, out of Stony Point on Cass Lake.  Good luck to all the anglers involved in these tournaments.

We will be going to our fall hours after the holiday weekend.  We will be opening up at 7AM and closing at 5PM for the fall and winter.  I don't know where this summer has gone too.

Our family is trying to get back in the routine with school starting.  Ben will be a junior this year; Crissy has started college at BSU and Jerimiah left yesterday for deployment.  Froggy is still burying cable down in the cities and will be doing some bear hunting this weekend.  Mrs. Froggy (Melissa) is getting ready to get back to her teaching in Red Lake.  The Old Toad and Gramma Froggy are just taking things day by day and doing what we can to help out with things.  We need to say "Thank you" to Auntie Mitz and Dick H and Kaleb, who help us out too.  Family and friends, what would we do without them.

If your up in the area this weekend, stop by and say "Hi".  Here's wishing you all a safe and happy Labor Day weekend, from all of us at Froggy's Sports.

Fishing Report

August 20, 2013

Fishing has been kind of spotty the last few days.  Water temps are on the rise again, with the spell of warm weather we are having.

There are a few walleye being caught, but they are working for them.  Our friends "the Pribyl gang" from Monticello, are marking walleye, but getting them to bite, is going slow.  Seems like perch have slowed down too.

Northern are active.  We have alot of sucker minnows going out the door right now.  We haven't heard too much about muskie fishing, but I would image they should be spotting a few of those.

Hope you can get out and enjoy the last few weeks of the summer season and the big Labor Day weekend yet to come.

We will be going to the CSI show the middle of September to put in our order for the 2013 winter inventory and the 2014 summer inventory.  I don't know where the summer has gone too.

This weekend, we are going to try to get away up the north shore.  With Mia in the service and Crissy going off to college and Froggy working down in the cities, the family will be getting together when we can this weekend.  We still have Ben and Mrs. Froggy helping out the Old Toad and Gramma Froggy.  And then we have Auntie Mitz, Dick and Kaleb.  Our family has grown up the last 10 years and that's the way life is suppose to be.  Thanks to each and every one for all your help at the store!

Hope you get a chance to get out and enjoy this weekend and remember there is some of the best fishing yet to come!

See you out on the water.

Fishing Report

August 12, 2013

Fishing has been fair, depending on who you talk to.  We are hearing they are picking up walleye in that 9 and 10 feet of water.  Northern have been active.  Lots of bobber fishing with a heavy northern minnow.  Perch are biting, but you have to pick through to get the bigger ones.  Crawlers right now are the bait of choice for the walleye.

Hope you can get out and enjoy fishing and this great weather we are having.

Our friends from Monticello, the Pribyl family will be coming up this weekend.  Chad and his dad, Roger, always seem to know the right spots and when to hit 'em.  We are looking forward to seeing them all again.

See you out on the water.

Fishing Report

August 4, 2013

Fishing has been picking up.  A little cool weather seems to have helped.  Heard today that Cass and Lake Bemidji are both producing fish.  Dick H. that helps us out at the store did well in about 6 to 8 feet, off the breaks and bars.  Thanks for the fresh fish, Dick!  He was looking for perch and picked up some nice eater walleye.  Water temp is around that 70 degree mark.

Minnows and crawlers seem to be the bait of choice.  Still having luck with the shad raps and rapajas in the evening, off the weed lines.

Hope you get a chance to get out and enjoy this  great Minnesota area we live in, and maybe even get a fish or two.

See you out on the water.

Fishing Report

July 28, 2013

Fishing has been okay.  Not great, but they are getting some to make it worth the while.  Walleye are in about 15 to 20 feet, off the breaks and bars.  Try for them along the weedline in the evening.  We are hearing some success with the pan fish, northern and bass.  It's just that time of the fishing season.

Weather has been really nice though, so it is still good to get out and getting fish is a bonus.

Froggy's oldest son, Jerimiah, is home on leave from Fort Hood, so we are spending as much time with him as we can.  He has so many friends and family to spend time with and so few days here at home.  It sure is nice to have him home for a few days.

Gramma Froggy and Auntie Mitz made a trip to Buffalo, for the Yonak family reunion on Saturday.  We had a great time and lots of good food to eat.  It's surprising how time gets away from you and we have so many cousins to catch up with.  So glad we made the trip down and got to see everyone.

Froggy is still working in Grafton, but will be taking a few days off to spend with Mia while he is home.

Hope you can get a chance to enjoy this weather and spend some time out on the lake.  Fishing might be a little slow, but it's better then working!

See you out on the water.

Fishing Report

July 20, 2013

Friends of ours had a good day fishing on Winnie.  They worked that 15 to 25 foot range, off the breaks and bars.  Caught walleye, perch and a nice northern.  Pounded brass and river mix minnow was the key.  Way to go Brian and Ellen!  Thanks for the update.

Cooler weather for the next several days should turn on the bite.  We are also hearing that the pan fish have been biting on some of the area smaller lakes.  It was just a great day to be out on the water today.

We heard from one of the area fishing guides, Terry Larson, of Northern Advertures, that he has been picking up some nice perch and a few walleye on one of the area smaller lakes.  He is using our river mix minnows and working about 15 to 20 feet of water.  Thanks for the information, Terry!

Fishing Report

July 17, 2013

Minnows are really hard to keep right now with the warm weather.  Lake of oxygen in the ponds , means weak minnows.  Sounds like the weather is going to cool off some this weekend, hope that will help the minnow situation.  Lots of crawlers and leeches being used though, and fishing is slow.  It still is good to get out and enjoy the summer weather and do some pan fishing or play around with the old bucket mouth bass.  We do have some river mix, red tails and light northern minnows at the store, which do seem to hold up better right now then the fatheads minnows are doing.  We are hoping a couple weeks will make a difference in the minnow situation, and fishing will pick up a little too.

Have to wish Froggy's sister and our daughter, Melissa, a Happy 45th birthday in Anchorage, Alaska!

It's so nice to see so many people following our fishing reports.  We try to do the best we can to keep you all informed.  Thanks again!

You have to work a little harder for your fish right now.  Guys are catching fish, but putting more time into it.  Leeches and crawlers are the ticket.  A few minnows used, but they are really hard to keep with the warm water temps.  Keep fishing those breaks and bars, about that 8 to 15 foot range.  Shad raps in the evening along the weedlines.

Hope you all had a good 4th of July weekend.  We celebrated Froggy's birthday July 6th and were especially thinking about Froggy's oldest son, Jerimiah, stationed at Fort Hood, TX.  Thank you for your service, Mia!  Thanks to all current and past veterans for your service.

Froggy is off to Grafton, ND this week, for a cable job out there.

Don't forget the Faith in Action concert on August l6th .  There will be two performances; one at 2PM and again at 7PM.

See you out on the water.

Fishing Report

June 30, 2013

We had a couple guys in the shop today who caught some l8 inch walleye out on Cass Lake.  They were using a jig and a minnow, but said they also lost some fish on leeches.    They were working the breaks and bars in about 15 feet of water.  Weather has been great today and I bet the evening bite will be on tonight!  Hope you get a chance to get out and enjoy this beautiful day and even get some fish to stink up the fry pan!

A good time had by all at Crissy's graduation party this afternoon and bonfire this evening.  Again, congratulation's Crissy!

Fishing Report

June 25, 2013

May fly hatch is on and fishing has seemed to slow down.  There are definitely more leeches and crawlers going out the door, as well as the rapalas.  Blue and white and the silver are really working.  Water temps are in that 70 range, so minnows are getting hard to keep.  Make sure you temper them.

They are predicting rain for Wednesday night, but sounds like a good weekend ahead.  Hope you will get a chance to get out and get on the lake.

Fishing Report

June 18, 2013

Another good day on the lake for most fishermen.  Pike Bay has turned on to leeches in that 9 to 10 foot range.  We saw some pictures of some really nice sunfish that were caught on "No Tell" lake.  You couldn't ask for better fishing then what we have right now.  Hope you can get out and enjoy it why you can.

Froggy and Mrs. Froggy are getting ready for Crissy's graduation party on June 30th.  Our youngest grandson, Ben, is finishing his permit to drive classes and helping us out at the store.  The Old Toad had some leg work done out patient this morning and I'm sure will probably be back in the store in a day or so.  You can't keep him down.  Someone told me I'm a minnow scooping mama, and you know I guess that's just exactly what I am!

Dont forget the Faith in Action concert on August 16th.  We have tickets for the  4 wheel raffle at the store.  Mitz works really hard on this event.  It's a great cause!

Hope you all have a great evening and thanks for stopping in a Froggy's when your in the area and also for checking out our website.  It's nice to see so many hits on our site.

Fishing is still doing well.  Jig and a minnow is still the bait of choice, but there are more leeches and crawlers going out the door today.  Water temp is in the mid 60's.

Happy Father's Day to all of you from all of us at Froggy's Sports!

Fishing Report

June 10, 2013

Walleye and perch are still biting.  There are more leeches and crawlers starting to go out the door.  Fish are starting to stack up on the breaks and bars in the lake now.  If the weather man is right, water temps should start to rise this week.  I would guess we are about 3 weeks behind time.  Fishing has been great though and lets hope we will have a good fall to make up for the late spring.

Fishing Report

June 5, 2013

Weather the last couple of days has been cool and rainy, but the perch and walleye are still biting.  Jig and a minnow is still doing the trick.  Sah Kah Tay Resort told us the fish house bucket was full.  Guys were getting some nice fish.

Sounds like the Leech Lake tournament last weekend also produced some nice walleye.  The Kraus Anderson tournament on Lake Bemidji will be this weekend.  Good luck to all entrants.

Heres hoping that next week will bring some sun and warmer weather.

Fishing Report

June 1, 2013

Jig and a shiner is still working on the area lakes.  Seems like that 8 to 10 feet is the magic number yet.  There are quite a few fishermen going out and everyone seems to be getting enough for a fish fry anyway.

Froggy's daughter, Crissy, had her high school graduation ceremony today.  We are so very proud of her.  She actually finished high school on April 5, 2013, her l8th birthday, but today was the actual class ceremony.  331 kids graduated from Bemidji.  It was a proud day for us all.

Hope you all have a good weekend.  Stop by and say Hi when your in the area.

Fishing Report

May 21, 2013

Fishing seems to have slowed down with the cooler weather we had yesterday and today.  I know we needed the rain, but a little sunshine would sure be nice right about now.

We are hoping to get more shiners in for the weekend, but it all depends on the weather.  A little warmer weather and some sunshine will make a big difference in the trapping.  We do have shiners in the store, but hope to have a bigger supply for the holiday weekend coming up.  We will try to keep you informed.

The majority of the walleye are still being caught shallow with a jig and a minnow.

Have a safe and happy Memorial Day weekend.

See you out on the water.

Fishing Report

May 18, 2013

Well, this was more like an opening weekend at the store.  Shiners and rainbows have been the minnow of choice.  We are hearing fish are still shallow, about 5 to 8 feet, with a few being caught as deep as 24 feet.  I think everyone was just glad to get out on the open water.  I guess we will have summer!

Thanks for stopping by at Froggy's.

Ice Conditions

May 14, 2013

Warm weather and lots of wind have taken care of most all the ice on the area lakes.  Some still have some ice that has been pushed up on the north shore, but it has all broken up.  Good news!

Ice Conditions

May 13, 2013

Little Wolf,  Midge, Steamboat are all completely open and with the wind and warm day coming tomorrow, I wouldn't be surprised if the bigger lakes will be real close to ice out also.  I would say everything should be open by this weekend.  There really is going to be a summer!

Fishing Report

May 11, 2013

It was a very poor opener, with ice on the lakes and the major rivers closed.  It was really cold and windy too today.  There were very people up fishing and we did not hear any good reports.  It is just too cold for the fish to bite yet.  The wind did help with the ice melt today though.  Little Wold looks like it will be open tomorrow and Midge Lake opened up too.

Froggy said Allen's Bay on Cass is starting to open up and we are hopint that by next weekend, most or all of the ice should be gone.  Temps are suppose to really improve this week also.

Hand in there, we will have open water eventually!

Thanks for the calls.  We try to keep you as informed as we can and thanks to those guys who braved it up north this weekend, for stopping in at Froggy's.

River closure

May 9, 2013

The Mississippi River is closed from the Power Dam to Wolf Lake, through May 17th.  Go to the DNR site and see additional river closures as well.  We have been told leeches should be trapping in about 4 to 5 days, as soon as the water temp warms up some.  We're off to a slow start, but we will do the best we can.  Mother Nature holds the controls.

Fishing Opener

May 8, 2013

The small ponds are opening up and lake ice is open aboout 20 feet in some places and where the rivers go in and out.  Sorry to say it doesn't look like ice will be out for the opener this weekend, unless some unforseen miracle happens.

We have been trying to get an answer from DNR regarding river closures and were told to check their website and listen to the news, regarding any river closure decisions.

Naturally, minnow trapping has been another issue.  After checking with several trappers, looks like we will have crappy and fathead minnows, also light northern and then crawlers and wax worms.  Haven't been able to round up spot tail shiners, or shiners of any kind and also no luck on rainbows yet.  This is just a real tough opener.

I would hope in a week or ten days, everything should be open and we will all be back in business.

Wish we had better news for you, but hope if you are up in the area you will stop by, pick up some bait and maybe try fishing from shore or open bays on smaller lakes.

Give us a call if you have any questions.  Hope to see you this weekend.

Ice Conditions

May 4, 2013

The last few cool days has not helped to melt any ice on the lakes.  Talked to Mark, DNR today and he said they are having a meeting the beginning of the week to see if they will be closing any rivers in the area, to fishing.  We will let you know any information we get.  Sounds like Monday will be warmer, but as far as complete ice out on area lakes, it looks kind of doubtful.

Will let you know any new information as we get it.

Ice Conditions

April 30, 2013

There is still plenty of ice.  We did get some rain and thunder last night and that should help with the ice melt.  We still have 11 days yet, so we will see what happens.  Once she starts pulling away from shore and if we can get some wind, the ice will leave fast.  Keep in touch.  Mother Nature is the only one who knows the answer for this one!

Fishing Report

April 27, 2013

Will ice be out for opener?  It will be close.  We are getting some warm days and lots of melting.  I am hearing temps the middle of next week, will be cool again and might slow down the ice melt a little.  There is still lots of ice, but the snow is melting and that's a big step.  Once we get that insulation off, then the ice will go fast.

We will keep you in touch with what's happening with the lake ice.

There are a few guys going out for perch and having some luck.  I think everyone is waiting for that open water and getting anxious to get out the boats.  Hang in there, it's coming!

Fishing Report

April 21, 2013

Guys going out are getting perch on Cass Lake, Pike Bay and Big Lake.  They are fishing from 5 to 15 feet of water.  Still walking out on the lakes.  We have on average about 20 to 24 inches of ice.  Don't see any lakes opening up yet, but sounds like we have some major melting coming the middle of this week.  It's going to be a close one to see if ice is off for the opener.

We are putting out our summer inventory.  Have to think positive!

Fishing Report

April 15, 2013

We are getting a few calls, people wondering what the ice conditions are.  We got another 5 inches of wet snow yesterday.  We are hearing the ice is about 24 inches yet, and has lots of insulation with all that snow on the top of it.  We need a good week to 10 days of 50 to 60 degree weather and lots of sunshine.  I will try to keep you updated on the ice conditons, as we hear about them.

We are anxiously awaiting for Spring to arrive and are looking forward to open water again.

Froggy started his physical therapy on his knee today and goes to see his surgeon tomorrow.  He seems to be getting around better each day.

We have ben busy spring cleaning at Froggy's and would like to start getting out the summer inventory by the end of this week.  That's the plan anyway.

We are hearing perch are biting on Big Lake and on Cass Lake.  Guys are still pretty much walking out or using a 4 wheeler and driving on an existing road.  It takes some work, but we're tough up here in Minnesooooooota!

Froggy had his post op today and after they changed the bandage, his leg is feeling much better.  It was on so tight, he couldn't even move his leg.  Much better now.  Recheck again next week.

April 4, 2013

Still just a few people heading out on the ice.  We had one guy in today, who is fishing on Winnie, and he is going out with snowshoes.  The perch are biting though.  The trick is just getting out there.  Hopefully with some more melting, we will have a good two or three weeks of ice fishing yet.

Froggy had his knee surgery yesterday, so now it is recovery time.  The Old Toad was also in the hospital this week, getting some fluid off of his legs.  My sister, Mitz, took care of the store for us yesterday.  A big THANKS, Sis!

Tomorrow our grand daughter, Crissy, turns 18 years old.  Where has the time gone?

Well, I guess that's all for today.  Hope you can get out to that favorite fishing spot of yours.  Like I said, most of the guys are walking,  We have a lot of good ice, it's just getting out there that is the problem.

March 20, 2013

The calendor says the first day of Spring, but Mother Nature says different.

There is really no fishing going on with the lake conditions right now.  With all the snow and then the water under the snow, plowing has pretty much s topped on the area lakes.  We are waiting for warmer watehr and some thawing, so we can get back on the ice and do some perch fishing.

Froggy has been up on his roof, working on an ice jam and will be having knee surgery on the 3rd of April.  The Old Todd has been working with other community members on getting the fishing dock and swimming pier out on Cass Lake again and I have been doing some baking and then there is always the book work.  Anyway, we all keep busy.

Will keep in touch and let you know when we can get back out on the ice.

Happy St. Patrick's Day!

The Leech Lake Perch Jerk was cancelled today.  It is just too tough to get out on those lakes right now.  There is so much snow and any holes that are drilled are just flooding the ice.  So you either stand in a foot and a half of water or a snow bank.  The way it sounds, we are suppose to be getting more snow again tonight.  Guess we will just have to all hunker in, be safe and see what tomorrow brings for us.  (Three deer just went by my window).  It has to be really a hard winter for the deer, trying to get around with all that snow and to find any food.

Anyway, take care.  We will keep in touch.  Spring is coming!

Perch fishing seems to have slowed down some.  We really need to get some of our snow melted off the ice.  Weather man is saying more freezing rain and snow coming our way Saturday.  There is a perch jerk fishing contest on Pike Bay too tomorrow from 10 to 3PM.  Hopefully we won't get too much more snow.  March has been a tough month weather wise and it's only the 8th.

Good news is we have plenty of ice.  Hope you get a chance to get out and do some fishing.  Once we get some melting going on, fishing should pick up.

We got dumped on Sunday.  Everyone spent today digging out.  We are measuring a good l4 inches in the Bemidji, Cass Lake area.

Not too much else going on today.  If your not plowing or shoveling snow, your just relaxing and hope that tomorrow you will be able to get to your favorite fishing spot.

The fishing contest on Saturday was a lot of fun.  We don't have  the name of the big winner yet.  Hope we will hear more details tomorrow.  Just want to say a big "Thanks" to all who participated.  It means a lot to our Cass Lake community.  Also, thanks to the Monticello Gang, who always come to our community events.  Most of them come up just for the day.  Thanks to all of you.  Your a big part of our family and we think the world of you all.
