Fishing Report

December 31, 2011

Another year gone by. Don't know where the time goes to.

Fishing seems to have slowed down, with the weather front we have coming in. We must have got about 3 inches of snow today, and we are suppose to have colder weather and windy tomorrow.

We wish you all a Happy New Year from all of us at Froggy's Sports and Froggy's Fish House Rentals. Each year we meet so many great people and appreciate your business.

Thank you!

Fishing Report

December 26, 2011

Hope you all had a great Christmas holiday weekend. Fishing seems to have slowed down some today, but there is a front coming in and they say we could get an inch of snow tonight. Some snow on the ice is a good thing and should help so the fish won't be so spooky. All in all, we sure have had a good December, weather wise and fishing wise too.

Average ice is about that 10 - 11 inches. There are a few brave soles driving out, but the majority are still using 4-wheelers, or smaller pickups.

Hope to see you out on the ice.

Good fishing!

Still no snow, so it continues to make some good ice. Fishing has been good. I haven't heard much on the walleye, but perch are biting on Cass and panfish on some of the area smaller lakes. Spearing for northern has been doing well. Without the snow, fish are a little spooky.

All of us at Froggy's Sports and Froggy's Fish House Rentals, want to wish all our friends and family a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Thank you for your business.

Merry Christmas to you all

See you out on the ice!

Fishing Report

Decembe 12, 2011

There is between 8 to 9 inches of ice on Cass Lake. I had a group of guys up spearing this weekend and they got a nice northern that went 15 lbs. Good time was had by all.

Perch have been biting on Cass in about 4 to 5 feet of water, using a fathead minnow. I also heard that the panfish were biting on Middle Sucker. It is making some great ice, but a nice coating of snow on the ice would be helpful.

See you out on the ice!

Good fishing.

December 10, 2011

Without any snow, the lakes are really making some good ice. Average ice is about that 7 inches. Grace Lake has 9 inches. We heard that the middle of Pike Bay has about 4 inches and more ice on the shorelines. We had several guys going out today to do some pan fishing and some perching. Tomorrow is suppose to be an amazing day weather wise and I'm sure everyone that can, will be out to enjoy the northern Minnesota day!

See you out on the ice.

It's making ice and the spear houses are going out. I took the 4 wheeler today to put out some of my houses. It is suppose to get cold tonight and a high of only 12 degrees tomorrow. That's ice making weather! Slow and steady she goes. Safety is important.

There were a few northern picked up the last couple of days. This should be a good weekend coming up.

SPEAR HOUSES GO OUT ON CASS LAKE!

Froggy and his son Ben were busy this afternoon. Ice is about 4 to 5 inches out on Allen's Bay on Cass Lake and they were able to put out 4 of his spear houses. The assembly line in Froggy's garage is really something to see and watching the going's on getting them on the ice is also exciting. Temps are cold enough now so that it is making ice 24 hours a day. We have all been anxious and are glad to see the hard water!

We have our decoy and heavy minnows in at the store and have finished putting out our winter inventory.

See you out on the ice!

December 1, 2011

There is an inch of ice on Cass, Wolf and Andrusia. Smaller lakes like Little Wolf and Midge, around 3 inches. I am busy getting my spear houses together and if all goes well, plan to get some houses out on Allen's Bay the middle of next week.

We are busy at the store getting out our ice fishing gear. We also got in some new fishing decoys today. We will also be getting in our decoy and heavy northern minnows in the next day or two.

We will try to keep you posted as to what's going on in the area. If you have any questions, just give us a call.

We wish you all a Happy Thanksgiving holiday!

Ice is starting to form on some of the bays on the bigger lakes. Ponds are frozen over and Midge Lake and Little Wolf Lake have been frozen for a couple of days.

Our winter inventory order should be in any day now and I will be busy after Thanksgiving getting all the spear houses ready to go. The change of seasons brings a new excitement along with it.

Happy Thanksgiving!

First Snow

November 15, 2011

First snow of the season. I guess it's time. Would like to have some snow before the real cold weather comes, to cover the septics. We got about an inch this afternoon.

There are still a few deer hunters coming in to register their deer, but we are hearing that there just isn't the amount of hunters out this year and not as many deer being seen. I think the warm weather we have been having might have something to do with that. Sounds like weather is going to turn colder the next few days.

Well, good luck to you hunters still out there looking for that deer.

After Thanksgiving, I will be busy getting houses ready for the spearing season. If you might be interested in renting a house, just let me know.

November 8, 2011

It was a great day to be out in the woods today. Sun was shining and temps near 40 degrees and just a nice breeze. Sounds like we might get a few showers tomorrow, but it is suppose to be really nice weather again this weekend.

We continue to register quite a few deer and have seen some really nice bucks. Several 9 and 10 pointers. Biggest one is still 235 and the biggest one registered for our buck contest goes 174.2 pounds.

Again, we wish you all a safe and successful hunt.

Just wanted to wish all of you a safe and successful deer opener! Sounds like maybe some rain and snow on Sunday, north and west of us. As of today, our weather looks pretty good.

Not too many guys out on the water now. A couple guys were in this week and said they were catching walleye out on Cass in the deep water, 40 feet or so. I also heard that the perch are biting on Leech.

Again, have a safe deer opener. Stop in when your in the area. Let us get a picture of you with your deer.

Fishing Report

October 25, 2011

Well most of the cabins have been buttoned down for the season. They are still finding some walleye deep on Cass, around that 30 to 50 feet. They find them shallower in the evening. Fatheads or rainbows are the minnow of choice.

There are still some crappie and perch fishing going on yet, too. As long as the weather holds out, there will be a few guys out on the lake.

From what we are hearing, duck hunting has been slow. They are picking up a few grouse. Archery hunters are out in the woods, waiting for that big buck and doe.

It is really great to be out, if you can, and enjoy these last great days of fall.

I am hoping to finish our jobs out in Bismarck in the next two weeks and then I will be back around and getting things together for my spear house rentals. I don't know where the summer has gone, but we looking forward to a great winter fishing season.

Fishing Report

October 7, 2011

Things have been slow the last couple of days, with the crazy wind we have been having. Water temperature is still around that 68 degree mark. Sounds like it will be cooling off next week and we should be having normal temps for this time of the year. Some of the the best fall fishing is yet to come, when that water cools off.

There are a couple of guys braving that wind (I guess that is what you would call it) and they are picking up some walleye. Some are finding them in about 18 to 20 feet of water and perch still around the weed lines in about 5 to 7 feet.

Grouse hunters are out and picking up a few. Great time to be out in the woods. Bear hunting will be ending up the end of next week and then it will be time to think about deer hunting. Don't know where the time goes.

I still have a few jobs to finish up in Bismark, and try to get home on the weekends. Won't be long and I will be getting things together for fish house rentals. You can always leave a message for me at Froggy's Sports or call me on my cellphone.

Fishing Report

September 28, 2011

Don't know where the month has gone. Weather has been great. Walleye seem to have slowed down some, but perch bite is still going strong. They are picking up a few walleye about that 20 feet range off the breaks and bars. Perch are biting along the weed line in about 5 feet of water. Some really nice 11 to 13 inchers.

We have quite a few guys up northern fishing and they seem to be doing well.

Saturday is the Cystic Fibrosis Tournament out of Break on the Lake Resort. Steve and Julie lost a son to this disease. This is the 10th year they have hosted this tournament. It goes for one day from 8AM to 3PM. There is a dinner and rules meeting Friday night at the American Legion in Cass Lake and the chicken and rib dinner is open to the public. They have an auction and things for sale, with all proceeds going to help find a cure for this disease. Sounds like the weather should be good and we hope they have a good turn out.

We had the Cabela's pro fishing tournament going on this weekend on Cass and we are proud to say that our own Jay Reiplinger and his partner from Hines, took 3rd place. Congratulations Jay!

Seems like the cooler temps have made the fish more aggresive. We heard from several different groups this weekend, saying that they have had really good fishing; catching walleye in about 20 feet of water out on Cass. Most of them using minnows. Some of the best fishing of the year is in the fall.

Hope you get a chance to get out on the lake, do a little fishing and enjoy the weather.

What a change in our Minnesota weather! We went from 85 degrees to 60 degrees. That takes a little getting used to. I guess for the fish too, although guys are still picking up some walleye and the perch are really doing well.

We have the Cabela pro-tournament going on for Friday and Saturday, so we have had a chance to meet some of the pro-fishermen and have been selling alot of redtails and creek chubs. They seem to be finding walleye, but are looking for the big ones. I would think a couple days will help make the fish more aggresive. Good luck to all the contestants!

We also have coming up, the Cystic Fibrosis tournament held out of Break on the Lake Resort, the weekend of September 30th.

Hope you will get a chance to get out, enjoy the fall weather and do some fishing.

Walleye are still biting on Cass Lake, using crawlers and/or minnows. With the water temps cooling off, the bite will be going more to minnows. Walleye are coming up a little shallower and guys are also picking up some nice perch.

We heard Leech was doing well for walleye about 7 to 10 feet on the weedline, using minnows. Perch bite is also going on Lake Andrusia.

My daughter shot her bear on the 4th of September (her Papa Joe's birthday!) It was an average size black bear and she got it with one shot. She sure was excited. We have had several bear registered at the store, but with all the acorns dropping, hunting has been tough.

Good luck to all you hunters and fishermen too. Enjoy some of this nice fall like weather.

I am off to Bismarck for a couple of weeks to finish some jobs out there. Then will be back in Minnesota.

The big Labor Day weekend is just around the corner. Don't know where the whole summer went to.

Fishing out on Cass Lake has been just awesome. Using crawlers and working breaks and bars in that 18 to 25 foot range has been really producing the walleye. Afternoon and evening seem to be the best time of day. In the evening they are working the weed lines, using shad raps and rapajas. We are hoping for the bite to continue, as the cooler weather comes and water temps cool off some. Right now the water temp is about 73 degrees. Hope you will get a chance to get out there and enjoy some really good fishing.

Have a safe and happy holiday.

Fishing is doing well. Crawlers are the ticket on Cass, working that 18 to 20 foot depth, off the breaks and bars. Northern have been biting also. It seems that big sucker minnow and a bobber are doing the trick. It sounds like we will be getting cooler weather next week. The best is yet to come.

We are gearing up for the last holiday of the summer. Don't know where the time has gone. Hope you will stop in and say Hi when you're in the area.

Bear hunting will be opening in a week. My daughter, Crissy, is going to try for her first bear. I'm hoping one will come in to the bait for her.

Weather has been great, so I hope you get a chance to get out and enjoy the water and the nice evenings.

Not too much new happening. Water temps are around 78 degrees. Needs to cool down some and fishing should pick up. Best bet for catching those "eyes" are crawlers. They are still out deeper during the day and coming up to the weed lines in the evening. Shad raps in the evening.

They are getting some nice perch and there is northern and bass action. Smaller lakes are producing some panfish also.

Hope you can get out and enjoy some of these nice August days. Don't know where the summer has gone.

Fishing Report

August 6, 2011

With the weather fronts coming and going every couple of days, fishing still seems to be doing okay. Walleye seem to be doing the best in the evening, using shad raps and rapajas. Crawlers are still the popular bait.

Some nice size northern have been biting on Leech using the light and heavy northern minnows.

Sounds like we have rain coming again tonight and then the temps for the next few days are going to be in the 70's. Water temps are near 80 degrees now. If minnows are used for bait, don't forget to temper them, so you don't take them from 48 degree water temperature to 80 degree. If we get a few days of cooler weather, that should help the walleye bite also.

See you out on the water.

Fishing is still going strong. Water temps are around 63 degrees, so the jig and minnow is still working. As soon as the water temps rise, they will be switching over to leeches and crawlers. Everyone is concerned about the state shutdown and getting DNR licenses. If you are planning to come up this way this weekend, I would suggest getting your license on line. I wouldn't think shutdown would last for too long. I am hoping that these politicians will work together and get things settled. Fishing Report

May 23, 2011

Sounds like the walleye have slowed down some today. We had rain last night, so it might take a day or two for them to settle in for their feeding habits again. A jig and a minnow still seem to be the bait of choice, although there are some crawlers and leeches being used. I am hearing of some crappie biting also. All in all there are really no complaints about the fishing for the last week. Sounds like the weather will be nice for the next few days.

We wish you all a safe and happy Memorial weekend. Stop in and say hi when your in our area.

See you on the water.

Good fishing!

Fishing Report

May 18, 2011

Walleye are biting. Cass, Wolf and Andrusia are still shallow, that 7 to 9 feet with a jig and a minnow. They have been getting walleye on Pike Bay also, but deeper. Between thaty 18 to 25 foot range.

Water is warming up and shiners are starting to come in to the traps. We have had a great week weather wise, sunny and warm.

See you out on the water.

Good Fishing!

Fishing Report

May 14, 2011

The opener started out wet and cold, but the sun did shine this afternoon. We are hearing reports of walleye in 7 to 9 feet of water, with a jig and a minnow. Sounds like Cass, Andrusia, as well as Big Wolf, produced some fish. Shiners were a premium this weekend because of the cool water temps and just were real slow to trap. For every 20 to 30 gallons we hoped to get, we ended up with 10. The rainbow minnow did seem to do well though, this weekend. I'm sure with the warm weather coming next week and the sunshine, we will be getting all kinds of shiner minnows. Would have been nice to have the opener a week later. I guess that's kind of the rule of thumb for opening weekend though.

Hope you had a safe and successful opening weekend!

See you out on the water. Good fishing!

Day before the big fishing opener

May 13, 2011

Sounds like the opener will be cloudy, cool and rainy. Water temps have gone down the last couple of days to about 43 degrees this morning. We are getting some shiners in, but very slowly. I am sure that with the warmer weather and sunshine that they are predicting for next week, we will have all kinds of shiners. You just can't fool with "Mother Nature". We do have rainbows and all kinds of fathead minnows. The store will be open all night tonight. We usually close for a couple of hours between 2AM and 5AM. Have a safe trip up north and a great opening weekend.

Someone stopped by the store yesterday and said they had heard on KSAX (not sure if it was radio or TV) that they were following our blog and were wondering where Froggy's Sports was. Hope you will check out our web page. We are located just south of Cass Lake on Highway 371. Our family run store has a little bit of everything. Bait, tackle, snacks, hot sauces, clothing and even some really awesome horseradish pickles. Stop by and check us out!

Have a great opener!

Hope to see you out on the water!

Good fishing.

Fishing Opener

May 9. , 2011

Fishing opener is just around the corner. We are busy getting tanks filled and putting inventory out on the shelves. We will be getting our minnows in on Thursday. Water temps are in the mid 50's. Question is, how are the shiners going to trap? We should know more by Thursday.

We will be open all night Friday night until 1AM Saturday morning and then reopen the store at 5AM. Just give us a call if you are running late Friday night and need us to stay open.

Sounds like the weather is suppose to improve and be sunny this weekend. We wish you all a safe and good opener.

Fishing Report

April 30, 2011

Ice is all out now, but this weather really keeps us quessing. One nice day and then a couple days of cold again. We are hoping for a better weather pattern next week. Boats are getting ready and people are out opening up their cabins for the opener.

Guess we have to just take one day at a time. It is sure to get better!

See you out on the water.

Ice Report

April 25, 2011

Hope everyone had a very happy easter weekend! Ice is really disappearing. I would say most of the large lakes are about 2/3rds open and what ice is left is that really black stuff.

Guess we will really have spring! Sold some minnows today. Everyone is anxious to get out and give fishing a try.

See you out on the water!

Ice Report

April 21, 2011

Sorry our website was down for a couple of days. We had computer problems and I didn't get the email to renew our domain until last night. We are up and going again!

It has been cool all week and ice is disappearing slowly on most area lakes. I see this morning that Midge Lake is open now. Midge and Little Wolf are usually the first lakes to open up around here.

We have been working on our inventory and Dean has been down in the cities burying underground cable. He will be around this weekend. We will be glad to see him back and have a bunch of questions for him. All in all, things are going fine.

We will be closed on Sunday for Easter and would like to wish all of our friends and family a very happy and safe Easter weekend.

Fishing Report

April 12, 2011 We had rain all day Sunday and all the snowbanks have disappeared. It has been really quiet the last few days, no one has been going out. I guess it's time to work on getting the boat out and thinking about open water. I'm sure there will be some guys walking out to ther secret fishing hole yet, but after all that rain we had, the ice is pretty honeycombed. We will be getting our summer inventory in the store in the next couple of weeks, so we will be working on change over. It has been a long winter and we are all looking forward to open water, green grass and warm weather! See you out on the water. Good fishing! Froggy

Fishing Report

April 7, 2011 Perch have been biting on Winnie and Leech and stil getting some on Pike Bay too. There are a few guys still driving out, but most of them are using 4-wheelers now. We have had some nice warm weather this week, so ice could change fast. I have been seeing some boats and campers going by. I would guess up to Rainy River. Everyone is getting anxious for opening. It has been a long winter. Good fishing! Froggy

Snow Report!

March 23, 2011

The big snow storm missed us this time! We only got a little covering of snow. Weather has turned colder again though, so that means the ice is still good and it continues to be easy to get around.

Not too many fishing the last couple of days, but we have a couple of groups coming up to the area this weekend.

Hope to see you out on the lake.

Fishing Report

March 21, 2011

Guys were out looking for panfish and crappie this weekend. They are just starting to bite. Those crappie guys are pretty quiet though. They are still picking up some perch. Ice is still . good, but you want to stay away from the river inlets and outlet.

We are looking for a buyer for Froggy's, so if you might be interested, give us a call. I will be working with a friend of mine burying underground cable this summer.

If your in the area, stop in to say hi.

Good fishing.

Fishing Report

March 15, 2011

Great weather the last couple of days has turned on the fishing and made everyone feel a little better. Perch have been doing well and guys are getting out to that "secret spot" to get a limit of crappie and sunfish.

Lakes have plenty of ice and snow has melted. Hope you can get out and enjoy this great weather and some of the best fishing of the season.

Fishing Report

March 11, 2011

Still getting some perch. Ice conditions are great. It sounds like next week, we will finally get three or four nice warm days and I think that will improve the perch bite. Hopefully the ice will hold and we will get some good perch fishing through the end of March.

Just a reminder that our hours on Sundays are from 7AM until noon. Please give us a call if you would like us to stay open later for bait.

Hope to see you out on the ice.

Fishing Report

March 2, 2011

Not too many people around the last few days. First we get a warm day, then a cold day, and then a day when the wind is blowing you off your feet.

Ice is better now then it's been all winter. Snow has melted on the lake, so you can get around all over with no problems.

Guys that are going out, are picking up some perch. Hopefully the weather will settle down, so the action will pick up.

See you out on the lake.

Perch fishing is doing well out on Pike Bay. They are working that 15 to 18 feet of water, using fatheads or wax worms.

We will be shortening our Sunday hours. We will be open from 7AM until noon, on Sundays. If you are running late or need us to stay open a little later, just give us a call at the store 218-335-6800.

Sounds like it will be warming up some tomorrow, so hope you can get a chance to get out and enjoy some ice fishing.

Fishing Report

February 23, 2011

Perch bite is on and we have been getting some really nice walleye just before dark, from my rental houses on Allen's Bay. The melted snow has frozen and you can get just about anywhere now. We are working 15 to 18 feet and have heard some guys having luck in that 24 foot range.

This is the last weekend for walleye and northern, until the opener in May. There will still be lot of good perch fishing, hopefully for a good couple of weeks or more, depending on how the ice holds up.

Hope you will get a chance to get out this weekend and pull in a few of those "eyes".

Good fishing!

Fishing Report

February 19, 2011

Cooler weather has come back and helped freeze up some of the melted snow on the lakes. Walleye bite has been happening on Allen's Bay on Cass Lake just before dark and we have also been picking up some nice perch. Pike's Bay has also been doing well. They are working that 15 to 18 foot range, just off the humps.

Eelpout was going on in Walker this weekend and some of the residents on Steamboat Lake had a local get together, also. They were fixing some of their famous bloody mary's.

Sounds like the southern part of the state is going to get hit with more snow. They are saying an inch to three inches for us. Most of the snow has melted from the lakes and getting around seems to be easier.

Hope you get a chance to enjoy this extra long weekend and get out on the ice.

Good fishing!

Fishing Report

February 14, 2011

Happy Valentines Day!

Winter Fishing Challenge tournament on Cass Lake went well. Weather was great and a good time was had by all. Biggest Fish caught was a northern just over 2 lbs.

With this string of warm days, perch have been biting. Moving around on the lakes is getting to be a challenge. Lots of water, with all this melting. It sounds like it will be getting colder this weekend.

I have an opportunity to work with a friend of mine, burying underground cable, as his foreman, so we are looking for a buyer for Froggy's Sports. The rest of the family will continue to run things while I am out on the road this summer. Mom and Dad are hoping to retire soon. So that's the way it goes. Life keeps bringing us changes.

Hope you will get a chance to come up and get some fishing in yet this month. I am still renting out some houses and the best perch fishing is yet to come.

Stop in when your in the area.

Good fishing!

Fishing Report

February 7, 2011

We had a couple groups who limited out on nice perch this weekend out on Pike Bay. It sounds like we will have a couple of colder days and then really nice for the Winter Fishing Challenge on Cass Lake, out of Break on the Lake Resort. Chamber has been busy getting the final touches in place. Rules meeting is on Friday night at the American Legion in Cass Lake and there will also be a walleye dinner, put on by the Cass Lake Fire Department.

Again, we will be shuttling people out with their portables. There will be someone available to drill holes, or you can drill your own. Volunteers will be getting out on the ice around 9AM. Tournament starts at noon and ends at 3PM.

Hope to see a lot of you out on the lake on Saturday.

Good Fishing.

Fishing Report

February 3, 2010

Fishing has been slow, but with a couple of warm days coming up, I am thinking this weekend should be much better.

Because of the slush and snow on Cass Lake, the Winter Fishing Challenge will be out on Allen's Bay this year. They will be going out of Break on the Lake Resort. We have plowed out the tournament fishing area and also the parking area. If you have any questions, give us a call, or call the Cass Lake Chamber. We are hoping to have a good turn out. There are some great prizes, along with the cash prizes and lots of fun for all. Hope to see you there!

January 29, 2011

Just a little mention for all you snowmobilers. We had several groups in today and were told that our area has the best snow for snowmobiling in the whole state! Hope all you snowmobilers get a chance to get up to good old northern Minnesota and enjoy the snow!

We always appreciate your stopping in to say Hi.

Fishing Report

January 26, 2011

Perch and walleye are biting out on Pike Bay and Cass Lake. We have also heard Winnie is producing fish too.

I have been plowing out on Allen's Bay out of Break on the Lake Resort and have not had a slush problem. There are some good roads out on Pike Bay too. There is some slush out on Pike Bay and guys have been plowing, so you can see where the good spots are.

As always with the ice, you have to watch where your going. Weather is really nice this week and we have some groups up doing some perching.

Don't forget the Winter Fishing Challege tournament coming up on February 12th. Always lots of great prizes and loads of fun for all.

Hope to see you out on the ice.

Fishing Report

January 18, 2010

Well, I have been busy keeping roads open to my spear houses. The guys have been getting some perch, some 3 to 5 lb northern and a walleye or two. With all the fronts coming and going, fishing has been on the slow side. There are still some slushy spots, but where I have plowed, the ice is solid and the next few days are going to be really cold, so I think that will help. Hope you will get a chance to come up and get out in an ice shack!

Just a reminder, the Cass Lake Chamber has it's annual fishing contest on Cass Lake on February 12th. Tickets are $35. and we have them at the store. If you buy them on the ice, they are $40. Lot of cash prizes again this year, as well as other prizes worth $100 and more. It's always a fun time.

Hope to see you out on the ice.

Fishing Report

January 10, 2010

I have been plowing on Pike Bay, Allen's Bay on Cass and on Big Wolf. There is no problem getting around. Fishing has been doing okay. They are still working that 12 to 16 feet for walleye and shallower for the perch. They might not be getting huge amounts of fish, but everyone seems to get enough for a meal anyway. If you can spend a day out in the ice shack and get a meal of fish, what more can we ask for!

Hope you will get a chance to come up to good old northern Minnesota and enjoy some time fishing on the hard water.

Give me a call if you are interested in any ice house rentals, or need some plowing done. If there is any other questions you have, give us a call.

See you out on the lake!

Fishing Report

January 3, 2011

Happy New Year and hope you all had a good holiday weekend. We got dumped on with snow, so everyone has been busy plowing out Friday and Saturday.

After the snow, now we have the cold weather. Fishing has improved, since the front has moved through. Northerns were moving today and walleye were biting. The sun was shining today and with the snow on all the trees and the snow banks all over, it really looked like a good old fashion Minnesota winter. You have to watch for some slush out on the lakes.

Keep those snuggies on!

Good fishing!
